It's 6:06 a.m., Wednesday , July 22nd here at The Vacationland Inn, on Wilson Street in Brewer, Maine.
Ross, is, of course, asleep.
I am in the nice breakfast room with a bottomless cup of hot coffee. Free breakfast. Not fancy but includes homemade waffles if you want to make them. A very clever and well engineered machine makes two waffles at a time. The lady in charge of breakfast here demonstrated it's use yesterday morning. They have Wild Maine Blueberry Sauce to go on them, which is very good. Ross put the canned pressurized whip cream on his yesterday. Ha!
The hotel is quite nice and has been refurbished from an old hotel a couple of years ago. They have tried to make it a rustic cabin in the woods style. Lots of wood. The stove in the kitchen is an old wood stove like there was at the farm when I was a toddler and maybe when I was 7 or 8 they changed it from wood to oil.
Lots of room at 6 a.m., not many tables occupied. I am able to set up my computer and spread out without feeling guilty. Hot coffee, lots of room, friendly, warm cabin style atmosphere. Nice.
Ross in the second breakfast room attached to the one I am in today. He was waiting for me to deliver his waffle, eating a bowl of cereal. They have a clear acrylic lamination on top of the tables and have embedded placemats that have historical information about Maine history. The one I am at this morning speaks about Maine's part in the American Civil War, 1861-1865. Joshua Chamberlain b.Sept 8th, 1828 and died Feb 24th 1914, led the Maine Regiment. He was born and raised right cheer in Brewer, Maine b'God. Ayuh.
Yesterday we dropped the hire car off at the airport and I paid the $700 US for the week's use. It was a very nice new Hyundai Sonata, and worked very well for us. Now we have stolen Dad's car, "The Beast." It is an ancient Ford Explorer with 4-wheel drive available. Sideboards and "Jesus handles" allow you to climb up into it. (They call 'em Jesus handles because when the tired old suspension goes over some of the big potholes and ruts on Maine Roads you say "Jesus!!" and grab the handle.)
The back deck at Dad and Sandy's house. Overlooking Sedgeunkadunk (have to check with Dad about spelling there, I think I got carried away with my dunks) Stream, which originates from Brewer Lake. Their address is 229 Brewer Lake Road, Orrington, Maine USA 04474. In case you want to send a Christmas Card.
They have a small 2-bedroom house with a very lovely garden setting and many beautiful trees. They have this gorgeous stream running strong out the back and across the stream, on the other side is woods, where they often see deer and other animals. They watched two large beavers struggle upstream a few days ago. Their backyard is full of action, Many beautiful birds, including several regular hummingbirds. Woodpeckers, Cardinals, Gold Finches, Blue Jays, just to name a few regular birds at the birdfeeders, with many chipmunks and squirrels always there. It is a lovely setting, sitting in a chair on the back deck with their cup of coffee, watching the continually changing scenery and the activities of the live action zoo around you.The steam provides a beautiful and lovely sound track of waterfall.
Ross got in touch with his International Rotary Club mates in Bangor yesterday and after we dropped off the hire car at Bangor International Airport, we dropped Ross off at his noon time meeting. Dad and I went to The Coach House Restaurant, where we had a coffee and a cinnamon bun, with the melted icing served on the side in a cup. Nice. We saw our old favorite waitress, Wanda, who is just the same, Little Lee. She is very upbeat and personable, and was , seemingly, very happy to see Dad and I and remembered me from our last visit. After brunch, we headed back to the house and checked in on Sandy, had a chat and then it was time to go back into Bangor and pick up Ross from his lunch meeting at 2 p.m.
We brought Ross back to Dad's house and sat around and told tall tales for a while. We talked about our trip up the coast and described Red's Eats and the town of Wiscasset for a while. It was a lovely visit. Dad and Sandy seem both reasonable well for their age. Sandy is still bothered by a few medical conditions and is not getting around as well as she might be, according to Dad. Dad seems pretty good, his regular golf, seems to have kept him in reasonable shape, and I have a date to let him beat me again on Thursday, together with his old pal, Spencer Greatorex (Spelling Dad??).
We eventually left and went back to the hotel to do our rapidly increasing pile of laundry, which we had last done at the "Wash, Dry, and Fold" place in 48th Street in Manhattan. I had purchased some fabric softener, which Ross doesn't usually use, but now his clothes will smell particularly nice.
I took charge of doing the laundry, which was delayed because there was only one washing machine and one dryer and we had at least two loads. Ross, left to visit the Mickey Marden's Salvage Store, which was about a kilometer up the road. He wanted to get his 10,000 steps up. Since we had left Manhattan, we haven't managed many steps per day, since we are travelling in the car.
We had visited Marden's the day before as well as Walmart. He found a treasure at Marden's, a lovely pearl button Cowboy shirt that he got for under $10. At Walmart he purchased a blue luggage strap. He had lost his and wanted a pink one, but luggage straps are few and far between here in the wilderness, so I'm afraid you have to take what you can get. He thinks he might find a pink one available at Bangor International Airport. Hmmmmmm.
Sandy in her normal reclining chair in the living room at Dad and Sandy;s house.
After laundry we went back to Dad and Sandy's where she had made us a magnificent dinner of roast chicken and veggies and it was great. We had another lovely chat and eventually left them to it at around 8:30 and came back to the hotel for an early night.
Today we are travelling up to my old Alma Mater, The University of Maine at Orono. Also we are going to explore Old Town and try to see the Old Town Canoe factory. We are doing a reconnoiter
to find The Black Bear Inn, in Old Town, where Ross has been invited out by his new Rotary mates for dinner Thursday night.
Well, it's now just past 7:20 a.m., I have been blogging in solid comfort for about an hour and 15 minutes. The above blog is my work finished.
I will get through the shower and cleaned up and freshly clothed and see if Ross is almost ready to greet the new day.
Bye
Lance and Ross in Maine.
