San Francisco Day 2 Thursday July 2nd

Let things continue as they begin. After a decent night's sleep I woke at about 6 a.m. on the morning of Thursday, July 2nd. As I got dressed and got ready to sneak out to Starbucks for a coffee and a new blogpost or email, Ross rolled over and was briefly awake so I told him what I was doing and he said he would attempt to get up at 8 a.m.

I went and had a lovely "Flat White" and wrote the email you last received.

Then I returned home to The Mark Twain Hotel and Ross was almost ready to get up at not much after 8. We both had showers and shaves and got tidied up and strode out in search of breakfast and then Macy's in Union Square to post packages to Isabel and to Poppy and Melanie James.

We got more Flat Whites and a breakfast box from Starbucks and went to Union Square Park to sit at a table in the garden and eat it. The trees and shrubs are in beautiful bloom.

Ross in front of a plant he assures me is deadly Belladonna. Hope young chilluns don't munch on the hanging flowers. They were very beautiful, however. This is near where we ate breaky in Union Square park.

Me in front of Union Square Macy's. We are on the job Little Lee. Looked for sale priced pearls with no luck yet. Good ones were more than $1000 so we just will keep looking.
We did eventually find the tiny US Post Office hiding down a sort of hidden alcove in the Macy's basement. It just supports my theory that US Post Offices are hidden and try to deny service as much as possible.

We mailed packages as thanks to Melanie and Isabel for their support on our trip beginnings. The lady said 8-10 days for delivery to far away lands.

Then we walked down to Market Street to Westfield Shopping Centre and went to Eddie Bauer where we picked up a fantastic very light but waterproof Goretex type rain jacket. Great jacket!

Then we walked and walked to try and find a bus that would take us to The Golden Gate Bridge where we wanted to walk across the bridge to Sausalito. We struggled mightily in our hunt for the correct bus with a result that according to my LifeTrak watch tells me I walked over 7 miles today.
My poor knees and hip!

The view of the bridge was poor because there was a strong wind and a thick mist or fog covering the bridge.

See the Golden Gate Bridge behind Ross? Don't worry, neither did we and we were right there.

Very solid fog. Very cold. Very windy. Very long bridge then 1 1/2 miles to walk after the bridge to get down into Sausalito. My poor knees and hip. Finally we walked almost into Sausalito and we stumbled into a great Italian Restaurant called Aurora. We both got to sit down! Yay!

We both picked the  Seafood Rissotto, which was magnificent. Lots of clams, blocks of fish, clams in the shell, baby octopus and calamari. in a wonderful short-grain rissotto in a tomato garlicky sauce.
Yummy.

Ross like a bit of Parmesan on his. We had lovely green teas and did I mention we got to sit down? Wow, what a relief! It seemed like a great restaurant, we enjoyed everything and the waitress was very nice.

We walked down into Sausalito after (another best part of a mile) and wandered around this very trendy and rich as Hades suburb looking in quite a few cool shops at weird and wonderful stuff.
Then we headed back to the Ferry Landing and got the Ferry back to Embarcadero and the famous Ferry Building.

Ross in his lovely new Eddie Bauer goretex rain jacket. Also carrying a bag from The Container Shop, where we got some small items yesterday. This is on the Ferry Pier at Sausalito where we are about to get the Ferry to the Ferry building.

We walked up to Market Street from the Ferry Building and caught the Electric Tram down Market Street a very long ways til we got to Castro Street, where we went to the Castro Theatre to see a double header movie showing the Beatles in "It's A Hard Day's Night" followed by "Gimme Shelter" with the Rolling Stones. The Beatles movie was really just like a movie length add for the album and was made in 1964.

We couldn't stay awake for the second movie so we stopped at a real American Diner called Orphan Andy. I had the Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich and Ross had Big 2, which was an all day breakfast.
Then back to the Electric Tram and a walk home to The Mark Twain Hotel. End of day 2 in San Francisco. It is midnight but I think I am finally ready for bed.

We have decided tomorrow's breakfast will be at Fisherman's Wharf at the famous Boudin Sourdough Bakery.

Stay tuned.

  1. I have always wanted to visit San Francisco. Since I live in Seattle, I truly have not real reason why I have not gone. Your pictures and descriptions have inspired me to really look at taking a trip down to San Francisco and take in the beauty and bustle of the city. You look like you had so much fun.
