Hello Blog Persons,
Every day in every way, Ross and I are getting better and better. (Even though I usually say I am perfect.)
We got up at around 8 a.m. this morning and got ready and went to our free breakfast at the Holiday Inn Express, then went to the L.L.Bean "Home" Store to get some sailcloth placemats that Ross had spotted the night before. Ross tried to get the sales lady to sell him the door knobs off the entry to the home store which appeared to be big brass lobsters. She told us that they were designed and made for the Grand Opening of the Home Store and were one of a kind. We said that she could still sell them to us as Bean's could have the same guy make some more but they wouldn't go along with that.
Finally we found ourselves on US Rt 1 North, just where we wanted to be. North To Camden!!
We passed through a selection of lovely small towns and villages along the way, however, including Brunswick, Bath, Rockland, Rockport and Camden. We decided to stop for a look at "Historic Bath", where the huge Bath Iron Works and Shipyard is. Lovely town, quite a bit larger than it's neighboring towns due to the jobs of BIW.
Here's Bath Town Hall. On Front Street but looking up to it from Center Street. The Cafe on the corner, which was fantastic, was appropriately named Front and Center Cafe.
Great smells in there with fabulous coffee. We also had a Snickerdoodle and a Oatmeal Craison Cookie. Yum!
Famous BIW, i.e., Bath Iron Works. Making Navy ships for the USA.
We found a Maine Icon (apparently) in Reny's Department Store, which we found fantastic.
Ross got two pairs of new shoes; just his style and quite stylish, for something like $25 for two pair!!
He has just worn them out to dinner, and we walked for about a kilometer and he says they are very comfortable. So what a great win.
Reny's Department Store in Front Street of Bath, Maine.
Speaking of a great win, when we ate at Bob's Clam Shack in Kittery, at the same picnic table as us was an Englishman, who wanted to lord it over us about the English narrowly beating Australia in the First Test of the current Ashes Series being held in England.
Ross just googled up the Second Test results whilst we were eating our dinner at Cappy's Chowderhouse in Camden's Main Street. Australia hammered England in the Second Test and won by about 400 runs, an absolute shellacking. Lets hope that is the confidence builder that Australia needs to win out for the rest of the series.
Red's Eats humble Lobster Shack. Home of the Officially Best Lobster Roll In The World!
After a lovely interlude in Bath visiting several interesting shops and the Front and Center Cafe.
We headed back onto US Rt. 1 North over the huge Bath Bridge and got to Wiscasset and got in line for the wold famous Red's Eats Lobster Rolls.
There was significantly more lobster meat in a Red's Eats Lobster Roll than the two one pound lobsters I had the other night for dinner at The Weathervane Restaurant in Kittery! The Best Lobster Roll In The World, without a doubt. I poured a little of the home made hand churned butter on mine, but Ross took his lobster roll plain.
Red's Eats Awards and Accolades Wall. Down East Magazine, Boston Magazine, USA Today Newspaper etc. all claiming Red's Eats to have the world's best lobster roll. Ross and I agree, after quite a good study of many lobster rolls all over Maine and Connecticut.
After Wiscasset we got back on US Rt 1 North, and pointed the nose of the car towards Camden.
Unfortunately Rockland Walmart got in the way. Ross has become enamored with Walmart. (Google up Walmart People.) and we spent quite a bit of time in Rockland Walmart. I got myself and Little Lee both new Timex watches for less than $60 for the two of them! Yikes! Now I am bringing you two new Timex watches Little Lee.
We didn't dare take any photos of the Walmart People but there were some deserving.
Ross finally found Luggage Straps to replace the Pink one he had lost but there were only Blue and Red ones. We had just spent several days finding no shop that even sold luggage straps and now we had found some, American Tourista no less. In the end, Ross put it back because it wasn't pink. He thinks he may be able to find some in Bangor. (The big city!)
After Walmart we kept on truckin' down US Rt 1 to Rockport and then, finally to Camden. We found our hotel; The Camden Riverhouse Inn. A lovely hotel with great gardens and veggie gardens right inn the middle of the city and next to the stream that passes right through Camden and under several shops to form a beautiful waterfall right into Camden Harbour and Marina.
We are both very happy with this hotel!
The buildings seen here are the shops on Main Street and , hard to see, is a waterfall poring down the hill, after passing under the Main Street of Camden, and flowing into the Harbour.
Schooners and sailing vessels in Camden Harbour and Marina. Jam packed in here, a very busy harbour.
Kayaker coming into the harbour past the big sailing ships.
We checked out all the good shops on Maine Street.
I got some T-Shirts for Nat and Ty and some metal models of Tanks and Tractors for Zach to put together. Also some pensils for all three boys. They are terrific Ticonderoga pencils for "beginners".
They are twice as big around as normal pencils. If somebody steals them they will easily be reclaimed because they will be the only ones in Australia and they are quite distinctive.
Ross found a plastic Lobster Buoy that he was very happy with. I got a pair of reading glasses with little LCD lights on the sides for reading at night without disturbing your room mates.
It was getting late by the time we got back to the hotel from shopping, about 7 p.m., so we asked our desk clerk, Lee, to suggest a restaurant. She did, but we walked there and they were too busy and after wasting our time for a little while they turned us away. We walked back towards home and went to eat at Cappy's Chowderhouse on Main Street, where we had walked up and down exploring the shops.
Got a wacky but cute waitress named Elly with a high pitched voice who had a giggle going.
Ross ordered Lobster Asian Spring Rolls and I ordered the special Joe's Seafood Stew with a side of Lobster and Avocado Salad. Very nice. Forgot my camera. Please excuse no evening meal photos.
One of our most expensive meals to date, $80 US. No matter, it was very good. Ross had what looked to be a beautiful Blueberry Pie a la mode. "Noice" as Kath and Kim would say.
This is a crosswalk across Main street, Camden, where all the shops we went to and also Cappy's Chowderhouse was at. Cross walks you were instructed to Stop. Wait. Wave to oncoming traffic and then cross the road. It worked. We didn't get killed.
I am in my new very comfortable Under Armour shoes and my new "Cool As A Moose In Maine" T-Shirt. Very comfortable, both shoes and T-Shirt. I got Ty a great t-shirt with a Moose wearing four Red Sox and the Boston Red Sox Logo. Very NOICE!
After dinner we walked home and I started finishing this blog. Ross went downstairs to the Business Centre and Lee, the receptionist, to print out all the flights and hotels confirmations for Canada.
Ross has just come back. He has been successful with his printouts of Flight Itineraries and also the Hotel Confirmations. Yay! Ross! Well done! I, and only I, apparently, was very worried about Ross leaving his Canada bookings too late, but after a few hours of trial and error and angst, we gotter done. Yippee. Ross will meet me in San Francisco, the night before we fly out to Sydney.
Now that is going to be the end of blog (EOB) for Sunday, July 19th in good ole Camden Maine.
Bye for Now Now.
Lance and Ross.
