Got into the beast after Ross got up and had breakfast and headed out for Orono (Home of the University of Maine main Campus) and Old Town, home of the famous Old Town Canoes.
On the road in "The Beast!"
Ross looking at a piece of dripping sculpture in front of Memorial Hall the Student Union Building.
At UMO; the history of The Black Bear Mascot.
We travelled hrough the Memorial Field House with the Gym, Basketball Court (The Snake Pit) the Fieldhouse with all the turf track and practice basketball courts.
Then we walked around and through the great mall down to the Student Union Building with the Black Bear Cafe and downstairs, the UMO Book Store. They sell lots more than books, however, with a huge array of clothes and Ross bought a beautiful Ice Hockey jersey.
A minute ago in our room at The Vacationland Inn.
The Maine Black Bear in front of The Fieldhouse.
After the tour of the University of Maine, we went to find the Old Town Canoes. We had seen an advertisement sign for Old Town Canoes at the VERY expensive Polo Ralph Lauren shop in the Queen Vic Building in Sydney on the way to the USA.
We decided to see the real thing since it was just a few minutes away in Old Town, Maine, the next town North of Orono.
Ross examining a model of a canoe at the Old Town Canoe factory store.
They had some beautiful canoes and kayaks.
I particularly liked the 15 footer with a square stern for running a small electric or gas outboard motor.
After the Canoe Factory visit we headed into Old Town for a look at downtown. That didn't take long but got a few steps registered on our LifeTrak watches. We haven't been doing very well with our walking since we have been driving a car. Also, the space between interesting things seems to be much greater in Maine that in the middle of Manhattan or San Francisco.
This is out of order, showing me in the Black Bear Book Store inside the Student Union Building next to the Fogler Library seen next. This shot actually happened before we visited Old Town.
I bought a couple of U Maine shirts, just to benefit my ole alma mater.
Fogler Library forms one end of the "Great Mall" and at the other end is the Magnificent Fieldhouse, which includes the Track, Basketball Stadium and Swimming Pool. The Ice Hockey Stadium, The Football Field, The Baseball Field and the Softball Fields are all behind the Fieldhouse at the Western End of The Great Mall.
After our trip to Old Town Canoes we returned to Dad and Sandy's house and picked them up and brought them to the Dysarts Restaurant on Broadway, in Bangor.
Ross and I had already had a late lunch at The Coach House Restaurant, immediately next door to our room at The Vacationland Motel, so we had very little to eat. We couldn't finish our meals, although they were very good.
We drove back to Dad and Sandy's house in Orrington and had another nice visit. I tried to photograph the baby hummingbird they have flying around the feeder out the back. This bird is not much bigger than a bumble bee. Fantastic to look at but, even though very young, it flies fast and was very shy, apparently.
I made a few attempts to catch it on film but failed.
Isn't this a great photo of a hummingbird?? No?? You're correct. Horrible.
Dad's back deck, overlooking Sedgeunkadunk Stream. When you are not a stranger, this deck is active with Hummingbirds, Goldfinches, Woodpeckers, Cardinals, Blue jays, Nuthatches, Chicadees,
and plenty of other animals including, but not limited to, chipmunks and squirrels.
Upstream to the left of the deck. I should do a short video with sound. Maybe I will do that tomorrow. The stream makes a beautiful waterfall sound at all times and the whole backyard is absolutely gorgeous.
Ross has a busy day planned for Thursday, as he is going shopping at the Great Bangor Mall, including outbuildings like the Book Store and Staples and further afield, The Home Depot.
While he does this I will accept being beaten at Golf by my Father and his old friend Spencer Greaterex. I am used to being beaten at gold, since my old pal Dave Collins does it at least once a week, and my son Ty now beats me soundly and easily. I try to remember only the good shots. Some whole days are wiped out of my memory as a result of this practice.
After Golf tomorrow, I pick up Ross from the Bangor Mall and we get him changed and freshened up as he is attending another Intl. Rotary Meeting and Dinner at The Black Bear Inn at Stillwater Ave., Old Town. I'll drop him off there and pick him up in a couple of hours.
On Friday morning we head down to Oakland and Aunt Dawn's lakeside cottage, Kool-Bee. I am meeting old Oakland sports teams teammates and school friends, Rick Pierce and Ronnie Joseph at The Early Bird Cafe, on Main Street of Oakland, on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. That will be fun to catch up with those guys. Aunt Dawn had planned a family get together for Sunday, which will be fun, as well. Hope to see as many family as possible then. I know Aunt Cilla and Uncle Carl will be there, as well as Dad and Sandy, so all of my Grandparents' (Wendell A. Russell, Sr., and Irene Miles Russell) children will be there! That's great.
Bye for now,
Lance and Ross in Maine.
